Republicans are ok with billion dollar boats, $800 billion for our wasteful military, millions upon millions for Trump's golf outtings, 10's of millions for a stupid wall, but God forbid we actually spend some money to help new parents. Maybe if parents stop having kids or abort them it would make Repugs happy.

Guess the Democrats want all taxpayers to pay more tax so new mothers and fathers can have up to $12,000 to stay at home for 3 months.

So far, the goodies are California senator's $500 monthly prize for families with children, Elizabeth Warren and her free childcare proposal and Bernie Sanders proposes free college.

New proposal by the Democrats: Up to $12,000 for 3 months of paid parental leave for new fathers and mothers paid for by a new 0.4% payroll tax split between employee and employer.

They claim it will be less than $2 for the typical worker which means that the 0.4% payroll tax would generate about $4 weekly or $208 a year yet the pay-out would be up to $12,000.

Seems as though there is some strange math going on and that they would likely have to divert funds to the program or they would have to increase the taxes on the program because generating $208 a year in revenue for a program with a payout of $12,000 doesn't seem possible.

The Democrats are coming with up with a new giveaway to manipulate voters into voting for them on top of all the other giveaways.
Wait a minute. If you have a child, you only get 3 months paid leave but then you and every other working person has to pay a .4% tax (which may no doubt be increased) for the rest of their lives? No thanks, that sounds like an awful deal.

It also discriminates against those who do not have children or just 1 or 2 children.

Honestly, I think we already pay too much tax and people are going to have to learn to balance their checkbooks themselves and not go running to the government to pay for everything. But if we are going to raise a .4% payroll tax it should be used to help pay down the debt - which is far more important to the future of our young generations then this bribery scheme to buy votes.

I notice no one here has an issue with people getting tax break after tax break for claiming dependents. Every worker is effectively paying additional taxes so that parents can get a credit for raising children. How is this any different?

No, actually they didn't but we did it anyway.

Trump is an idiot but that has nothing to do with the question.

Did alot of people move from America after we got Social Security? How about Medicare which was supposed to destroy America and turn us into a socialist country according to the fear mongers? Did alot of people move after 1965 as a result?

Like having by far the most incarcerated people in the world? How is that freedom? For-profit prisons? Is that freedom? We can do better. There is no reason why we should accept being more pawns for the ruling class of this country who bribe the people you vote for.

I've talked about this frequently. Back in Canada it is common -- at all levels -- to take a year off from work. The systems are set up for it. There is a temporary job market to support maternity/paternity leaves & offices structure with that intent in mind.

But it is hard to imagine if you haven't lived/work in the situation.

It does cost a little but it does promote women in the work force -- wages and participation and when you factor in daycare costs -- the costs to individuals (extra taxes) doesn't seem to bother folks.

Also -- paternity leave comes in to play. So for some couples the Dad can take most of the time if it works better for the couple.

When I had my kids, Canadian maternity leave was 6 months, then a year and now it is 18 months.

I can't imagine the cost impact on smaller companies. It's a luxury for sure.
