I saw that documentary and was shocked that a U.S. city looked so trashy and many seemed to accept it. Even accepted people wandering the city who clearly needed help. Its drug addiction and until that's talked about and dealt with problems will only worsen.

Worst part of watching that video was seeing the lousy mayor and city council ignore almost all of their problems within the city. Let the police enforce the law.

Sorry, but this is my city too, and I call BS. It’s not a housing issue, it’s a DRUG ISSUE. Yes, there is huge income inequality and that is an issue, but it’s a separate issue. If you really live in Seattle you know that the VAST majority of homeless here are on drugs. The city will not prosecute people in a meaningful way for drug-related offenses, nor do they give them the tough love they need to get clean. Seattle is a drug and alcohol enabling city. Unless and until that changes, the homelessness issue will continue to get worse.

Once again, highly conservative cities, such as Oklahoma City also have shameful problems dealing with the homeless. Singling out liberal cities as being special for having problems with the homeless to make being liberals look stupid itself is a stupid thing to do.

Looks like Seattle isn't spending enough money to throw at the problem.

Maybe the city council needs to show some political balls and impose the employee headcount tax that progressive Kshama Sawant and others advocated for.

It’s a drug problem, not a homeless problem. If they weren’t addicted to drugs they’d be home or able to get on social services. Seattle’s biggest problem is allowing drug addicts to do it openly and never take them to jail for it. Jail would actually help many of these people if they had programs like the one highlighted in the video from Rhode Island. How can someone get help if they’re left on the streets and no one does anything about it? I thought the reporter’s suggestion of McNeil Island was a great idea. They need help and they’re not getting it.

The real problem is that the State won't allow property owners to protect their rights as well as attain "public land".
How is this NOT a drug problem? If they were just poor people who couldn’t afford housing, they’d be living with family or on some type of social services. Because they’re drug addicts, their families don’t want them and they can’t get even menial jobs or get on social services.

Are you suggesting that people would just shoot these people to protect their property if they could? I’m a little confused about what you’re suggesting in your last paragraph. Could you expand on it?

How are ALL these drugs coming into the area so consistently though?!!!

Everyone talks about drug addiction but they rarely mention how this amount of drugs reach their destination and so consistently. We have a federal agency with the duty to stop or try to reduce this, but heck, they are using their power and influence to actually benefit the drug cartels, so I guess this should not be a surprise to anyone when cities get like this! LOL
