I give money to homeless folks every now and then, usually no more than $5.00, but when its 10 degrees outside and they are standing in one spot holding a sign all day, I do take some compassion on them, even if they spend the money on drugs. The ones who come up with great stories and tell me why they need the money, I also give them $5.00 every now and then, but only if their performance is good.
When my daughter was 11, my husband was out of work for almost a year. Her Grandma gave her $20 for a Christmas gift. In the parking lot to buy her a CD, we saw a homeless woman sitting in the snow. She was wearing a dress and her bare legs had sores all over them.
My daughter stopped and said, "I have a family who loves me. This woman has nothing. I want to give her my $20." I told my daughter if that is what she wanted then we will go to a deli and buy her some food with your money, but YOU must give it to her and tell her why. We did. The woman took the food from my daughter and said to her, "Bless you my child", with tears in her eyes. We went back later on to look for her but never saw her again. 30 odd years later my daughter will tell you that she thinks this homeless woman was an Angel.
BTW, a few days after this my husband received a call from a former coworker who now owned his own business and offered him a job over the phone. What you do to others comes back to you tenfold; good or bad.

I offer to buy people a meal. Nine out of ten times they pass.
