Looking back during the Clinton years, it became apparent to me that most of the televised media was favoring Democrats and was not the neutral news source I was taught that it was. I was raised as a Democrat. In 96 Fox came into existence and eventually this rift was much easier to see. Hence my move to Independent status, apparently along with millions of others. My frame of reference only goes back to the Reagan years, which my family was very anti Reagan so that was my attitude also.

Question is, has it always been like this?

How long has the mainstream media been leaning to the Left or Democrat
With TV, the answer is always since the medium was invented.

Both the news media and academia have been left leaning and more since the 1920s.

At least as long as I have been alive. Thing is-40 years ago some of the people involved were somewhat professional and made an effort to hide their bias. Worse-there were no unbiased sources to check what the "big 3" presented.

According to my parents a long time ago. Toyman is right though, they used to at least try and be professional.

Perhaps it had a slight lean pre-Fox, but its gotten really bad since Fox came along and showed how much money could be made with echo chamber journalism. Once that happened and all righties went to Fox, the rest of the media figured they might as well go left and copy the same model.
