This paper is about herd immunity. It is older but is also highly cited since it’s publication and discusses the theory of herd immunity. Sharing for anyone interested in learning more abut this theory. It’s not as cut and dry as many believe it to be. It’s also fascinating.
The article is heavily referenced so please feel free to check out the references at the bottom if you want to verify the info for yourself (always a good idea).
Glad you approve of them staying home during outbreaks and what happens during other times? Can't wait till polio makes its comeback, what will these parents tell their kids then "I followed the best advice I could get from the internet?"
Can't wait until polio makes its comeback? Well, by golly, it's your lucky day!
What will these parents tell their kids, eh? "Mummy and Daddy are soooooo sorry, we thought we were doing the right thing."
I can share anecdotal stories about kids dying because they wore a seatbelt.
Doesn't mean wearing seatbelts is a bad idea though, just sometimes doesn't work out for the best.
There is no such think as a 100% safe vaccine....or anything for that matter.
FYI- There were <150 cases of flaccidmyelitis in 2018. Compare that to 15,000 cases of paralysis anuually caused by Polio prior to vaccination campaigns and that was back when we had 4x less population in this country.
Soooo, for every kid you have to say "soooooooo sorry" to......there are 399 you don't have to apologize to for paralyzing them with polio if things were like they were.
Yes, agreed child's fever had gone down to 100 degrees. That warrants a trip to the hospital and visit from the CPS? Here, Officer, YOU read his thermometer. Or maybe only doctors are capable of doing that?
Very happy my kids are now adults. I, let alone my own parents, would have spent the rest of our lives in jail.

Very true. That measles vaccination came out when I was in HS. The school nurse came around the classrooms and asked for a show of hands who had measles. Sea of hands because parents, and doctors, knew that the younger the child, the safer it was to catch measles rather than as an adult. To the younger generation, the measles vaccine was not given to children, let alone adults, who already had the disease and were now immune. Miss Terri, that was the original concept of herd immunity. The key word is immunity. Now it has come to mean VACCINATED immunity. That 95% immunity rate doesn't only include children. Adults make up the greater portion of society, especially with our low birthrates, so they have to be included.
Imagine if Rockland wanted to ban all unvaccinated adults from being in public? They would have a riot on their hands. Would that also include the local politicians as well? lol Well, maybe if they have Doctor Congresspeople like one in California. Wasn't there a Governor who recently said he exposed his own 9 children to chicken pox rather than vaccinate them?
Vaccinated versus unvaccinated children: how they fare in first five years of life.
Twenty five children who had undergone their full course of childhood immunization schedule were compared with 25 children who did not have any vaccinations for a period of five years. Parameters for comparison were measles, pertussis, poliomyelitis, tetanus and tuberculosis.
Out of the 25 vaccinated children, only one child had mild measles at 2 1/2 years while 4 had suspected whooping cough at different points of the study period but not clinically diagnosed as pertussis.
Among the unvaccinated group, 2 died of measles before the age of 3 years while 11 others went down with measles during an outbreak in 1986. An unvaccinated child also died of tetanus within the study period.
I had measles at 6 months and chicken pox at 7 months in 1949. Rubella and mumps by 2 years old. Scarlet Fever (no vaccine today) with a temp of 105, WITH taking antibiotics, at 6 years old. Husband had all of them as well by 5 years old. Neither of us were ever hospitalized for any of them. Didn't get that Polio on sugar cube in school around 8. More luck didn't catch that one earlier?
We weren't superhuman, nor just lucky, but the average children back then.

"average" was about 500% more children dying than today.
Are those the good old times you want to bring back???
"The infant mortality rate decreased 85%, from 47 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in 1940 to 6.87 in 2005"
Other stats are similar.
The problem for those who wish to spread diseases more is that the populace as a whole will not put up with 5 or 10X as many of us dying because of misinformation.
Let's take this down to brass tacks. Many people are arguing that it would fine and dandy for 100's of thousands more to die each year.

Yep. Let’s see how loud the outcry is when we lose herd immunity and kids under 5 start dying regularly from preventable diseases.
