The land needs to be redistributed. It was stolen, it was misappropriated, and Black Africans were denied land in certain areas up until the mid-90s.
What we have is an injustice, and just ending apartheid does not end the injustice. It's like a thief regularly stealing from you and then suddenly saying he won't steal from you anymore. That's not justice. At the bare minimum he needs to give back what was stolen - and that's still not justice since he hasn't been punished yet.
The countries that can compensate white farmers are the Netherlands and Britain. They're responsible for this mess, and the South African government should not be on the hook for paying land that was stolen from them. That's like a thief selling back your stolen merchandise to you.

When Mugabe decided to reappropriate the land (the wise thing), a lot of White businesses chose to punish the economy of Zimbabwe by pulling up stakes and taking their investment dollars elsewhere. But the average Zimbabwen was poor before and after, had no impact on their life.
Nowadays Zimbabwe has largely recovered (albeit last year there was a currency crisis), and investors are coming back. Zimbabwe is in a far better state now where its own people control the resources than White colonialists (or their offspring).
I'm sorry, but White people don't have carte blanche to steal people's resources.
