Fun Fact: 1860 - Abraham Lincoln elected president
The 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. Lincoln received only 40 percent of the popular vote, way less than TRUMP.
Was that a good thing, or a bad thing? Were there calls for eliminating the electoral College?

Bad thing for the Democrats trying to keep the institution of slavery in place. They probably kicked and screamed and pouted like todays Dems.
Lincoln did win a plurality of the popular vote. There were 4 candidates in the race, and Lincoln got the most votes of any. If blacks had been allowed to vote, Lincoln would have crushed it. BTW Bill Clinton also won in 1992 with only 43%.
To me it's a moot question. The Constitution does not recognize such a thing as the "popular vote." Only electoral votes matter. It's like asking which team got the most yards in a football game. It doesn't matter. It only matters which team scored the most points.

Lol, Pretty much happens any time there is a viable 3rd party candidate. Another pointless OP.

That is exactly WHY we want it changed. It is hundreds of years old and does not work in modern America.

Lincoln got the MOST votes!!!! He got almost 30% more votes than the next highest.

Time to move on.
It still works exactly as intended. Trump won 2654 counties, Hillary won 487, and that is why he won the EC. The EC was intended to prevent high-population states from dominating low population states.
It was demanded and obtained by smaller states in 1787. Otherwise they would have likely refuse to ratify the Constitution.
Lincoln won the popular vote in 1860. He got more votes than any other candidate. Unlike Trump, who received less votes than Hillary. So the comparison is not valid.
Lincoln also got more electoral votes than his three opponents combined. So he would have won, with or without the EC.
