Politics has replaced religion in many people's lives. Religion was useful in that it allowed people to be tribal in a largely theoretical domain. Sure, there were always elements of theocracy, but in the US at least these weakened as a place became more diverse.

Politics, on the other hand, is very powerful in the here and now. And now it's infused with religious fervor. Yuck!

We need religion to make a comeback so that people put their negative energies there. Jehovah, Allah, Buddha, Gaia, Sinatra... I don't care who you worship.

I just want the zealots out of public affairs.

A large part of the problem is that the religious are still messing around in our politics, and making policy that serves their lord and master for the whole country.
When that's gone we'll see if things calm down.

And who would these religious people be?

Evangelical Christians? Environmentalists? Intersectionality theorists?

It's hard to make things less toxic. People don't agree on anything. We have a massive divide with people on either side completely disagreeing about how life should be. That's really scary. That's what depresses me. It's not about Trump or Obama or whoever you think is bad/good. We are divided as a culture, and I'm not sure there's a fix to that...

Not going to happen. Once the left reaches a certain amount of influence in a society the only options are total voluntary capitulation by the opposition, or increasing levels of toxicity until the opposition can be coerced or forced in to capitulation, using as much or as little violence as is required. In Europe the capitulation has been mostly voluntary so it's been mostly peaceful until now(although that may be changing). In America we're a bit more stubborn, so the process will be more messy.

It will happen eventually anyhow. The younger generation is a lot less religious, and a lot more secular. The older religious crowd will die off and a new secular crowd will take over. Things change.

I agree. I joke about a Great Divorce but is it really that crazy to think about? Having the discussion now could potentially avoid a much more violent path down the road. The vision of the left is basically Europe. That is the opposite of what the US was intended to be.

I often wish we lived in separate areas with a clear divide so a division would be possible. Unfortunately, we're all intermixed. Sure there's red states and blue states but each state has a solid chunk of the population that's one way or the other.

It's sad we can't divide so we could each have things our way and not have to fight about it anymore.

Yep. Progress happens. Trying to stop things from changing is always going to be a losing battle.
