It is important to remember the difference between correlation and causation. Right now CO2 levels are high and it is thought that because they are high they are causing global warming. That may or may not be true that it causes the warming.
Other scientists have postulated that methane is the cause of the warming. Not burnt methane, but plain old methane is causing the warming. So the question is if we burn the methane do you reduce risk of warming?
We also forget about the deforestation of the planet, particularly the Amazon. That itself could be causing the rise in CO2 levels.
