I say deal with damages from global warming as they come. Then the debate will only be about how much taxpayers should be placed on the hook for the expenses of cleaning up the messes left.
Well, when I was in elementary school, the "alarmists" were saying we were in for another ice age. We had had several years of cold weather-the story was all the pollution we were putting in the air was blocking the sunlight and resulting in cooling. We had a nutty enviro teacher in IIRC 3rd or 4th grade, she used to bring in all the magazines quoting the "experts" on the coming ice age. I grew up around Buffalo-when the blizzard of '77 hit, you had to wonder if the alarmists weren't right.
Back around 1980, there was a series called "In Search Of..." narrated by Leonard Nimoy. One episode was entitled "In Search Of...The Coming Ice Age." The brutal winters of the 1970s (particularly that of 1977-78) spurred expectations in the meteorological community that the Earth was entering a colder period along the lines of the Little Ice Age. Those predictions weren't exactly right, either.
When the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its dire report in October warning of humanity’s fast-approaching reckoning with global warming, one factor adding to the urgency was a new estimate about how much additional carbon dioxide was being added to the atmosphere as a result of the warming of Arctic permafrost.
With rising Arctic temperatures setting free a vast amount of carbon previously locked beneath permafrost, the additional greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere would speed up warming, the report concluded — and that, in turn, would further melt the permafrost.
It is “feedback loops” like that one that make climate change unpredictable and represent a threat of global warming spiraling out of control.
“It’s already begun,” Thomas Crowther, professor in the Department of Environmental Systems Science of ETH Zurich, told Yahoo News. “The feedback is in process.”
