I don't think the OP has any experience with VA healthcare other than what FOX says it is.
I opted to receive all my healthcare from the VA. The VA hospital and medical facility is top notched rated compared to the local civilian hospitals. I have yet to meet a veteran at this facility who does not praise it for the treatment they receive.
If you remember the Yellow Pages you might remember that the two largest sections were/are Attorneys/Lawyers and Insurance. We now have D.C. stacked high with lawyers all defending the money grubbing insurance industry. These have teamed up with the medical industry reaping huge profits at the expense of the working person and even rendering them broke and homeless.
Universal healthcare may not be the best system, but it is a system where everyone can get the treatment they need. This would not limited the rich in insuring themselves for their cosmetic surgery. I am sure those who want and can afford additional coverage will find an insurance company who will be very happy to take their money.

Of course. But older people used it while you paid. Now, younger people pay while we use it.
Will it still work if we all try to use it at the same time? And what will it cost?
So did I. And I still pay a monthly premium. And I still have copays.
Medicare is a great system, it's cost-effective and its participants are highly satisfied with it.
Correction:
The recipients are highly satisfied. But they are only a small portion of the people paying for it. 130 million people work and pay for Medicare; 44 Million use it. That's why it seems cost effective.
Think of what would happen if 315 Million people tried to use it while the same 130 million paid.
