Interviews with several dozen Democratic voters around the country show how the party, which enjoyed victories in 2018 that were powered by female and nonwhite candidates, is now grappling with two complicated questions about race, gender and politics in the Trump era.

Is a white man the best face for an increasingly diverse Democratic Party in 2020? And what’s the bigger gamble: to nominate a white man and risk disappointing some of the party’s base, or nominate a minority candidate or a woman who might struggle to carry predominantly white swing states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania that both Barack Obama and President Trump won?

So much for the party of tolerance.

With progressives, it’s never about who is best qualified for the job. It’s about who has the correct skin color, ethnicity, and genitals to pander to the correct voting base.

Here is an idea Dems. How about skipping the identity politics and present a candidate that is not some far out extreme whacko ? If you want to win you need a basic message that does not include anything about amnesty for illegal aliens which is the number one topic today and a quick second would be gun bans.

I voted for Trump because I believed he was the best person for the job. I voted for Obama once not because he was black but because I believed he was the best man for the job. I plan on voting for Trump again because he is the opposite of all the nonsense that the Left is shoveling at us these days.

The NY Times making such a blanket statement about white people is racist in itself.

I wonder if not for Trump if they would still be in business today?

You clearly did not read the article, understand it, or you are lying. Read or re-read, if you are honest, the article. If you have questions, I would be happy to answer them for you. Good luck.

In fairness, if you read the comments, most of them - mostly from Democrats, and including those by women and people of color, seem to agree about not going too far with identity politics. It's silly to believe that you have to nominate a white male candidate to win an election. It's equally silly to think that you shouldn't nominate a white male candidate if he is the best person for the job.

This country is toast if half of the adult population thinks this way.

Its up to the democratic primary voters, no one is stopping them from choosing a non white candidate and/or a women, but currently the polls suggest they're happy with their white male candidates given white men (Biden, Sanders, Buttigieg, Beto) are doing well in the polls.

The NYT can't lecture people how to vote. 57% of all democratic primary voters are women and 23% are African American, and if white men are doing well they must be getting a lot of support from those two groups who are happy to vote for them.

The democrats haven't had a white male candidate since 2004, 16 years ago. The NYT should stop preaching nonsense.

the obsession with demographics is to feed some academic socialist theory. Has nothing to do with reality.

Democrats playing games.

Won't be until 2045 that whites are in a minority. the only hope the dems have is that enough white liberals engage in self loathing until such time they finally earn minority status and bestowed with government protection and privilege.
