These dinners are often the only times the other side of the aisle feels good about the current president, whoever it may be at the time. A smart Trump (with branding on his mind) could give a self-deprecating speech in which he poked some fun at himself as well as getting some digs in on the press and the Democrats could win major points with some folks. But he'd rather have an audience who laps up every thing he dishes out with any thought given to it.

That's ok--everyone knows we have a dictator with no sense humor--nobody wants him there anyhow. But it does seem extremely autocratic and unAmerican to tell his staff what events they may or may not go to.
Nobody needs to impeach this ass--he get's more obnoxious every day.
He's doubly upset this week because his boyfriends, Kim and Vlad, are having a sleepover without him.
Trump brings his woes upon himself. One of the primary reasons for the 1st amendment is to allow the media to hold politicians, including the president, their feet to the fire, to keep the politicians honest and transparent and reporting to all citizens all activities created by these politicians, good or bad and in the case of Trump his stupidity, bullying dictatorship, incompetence, lies, racism, and you know the list goes on and on.
Repulsivegan followers of Trump are in total denial also and show their complete ignorance of the truth and facts.
We already saw him in action at the Al Smith dinner, he has no sense of humor. I don’t think anyone really cares either way. Why does the right wing care so much about this and the Oscars, the Grammys.
But don’t worry, he will be Tweeting away while he watches.
This, exactly. Part of being a public figure is knowing that some people won't like you, no matter what, and that they will make fun of you. The best response is to roll with the blows, laugh along, and applaud at the appropriate times. You may be President, but you're a human with a sense of humor, like the rest of us, and you can take a joke.
The worst response for a US President is to choose not to attend, and even worse than that, is to order (order? what, are they in the Army?) his staff not to attend, if they are invited. That only opens the gate for even more barbed humor, more biting satire, and more "he sees himself as above the rest of us" remarks.
I'm no fan of Mr. Trump, but I hope that he reconsiders, that he and his staff attend the dinner, and that he takes any humorous jabs with laughter, or at least a smile and a chuckle. That would go a long way towards his re-election bid in 2020; that he can roll with the punches and be an ordinary guy that ordinary Americans could support.

Trump could no more attend that dinner and engage in some humorous give-and-take, than he could fly to the moon (that's an interesting idea, in itself).
