Voting is not a right its a privilege just like getting a drivers lisc. Gun ownership is a right. If dems are not just pandering for votes then ex felons should get their gun rights back once they paid for their crimes.

Used to be back in the day prison time didn't effect your rights at all once you were released. They would hand your guns back to you on the way out the gate. Not sure when that all started to change. Gonna have to poke around a bit.
Of course this was the "Wild West" I'm bringing to mind. Having done prison time didn't mean you couldn't carry a gun after you did your time. Don't think it had any bearing on the right to vote either. But those were different times of course.
Holding someones crime over their head, after they have paid their debt off to society, conflicts with the founding principles of the US system of justice!!!
Anyone who is even remotely patriotic or proud to be American should be 100% against any law that holds a crime over the convicts head after their debt has been paid off. (its as simple as that).

This will sound crazy but in some ways it's better to get a felony than a misdemeanor.
Because states have ways to apply with the governor for a pardon. No such thing for misdemeanor. And because background checks are so cheap a misdemeanor will follow a person for life. It is a type of life sentence.
Of course, it doesn't matter if the person is Rich or highly skilled. There are ceo's at companies that would not be hirable to bag groceries or clean toilets at those same companies.
I say if you do the crime then you should do the time. While you are doing your time you shouldn't have any Rights because you decided to check yourself out of the mostly law abiding society when you committed your crime. When you get out of prison your citizen Rights should be returned to you including voting and gun Rights UNLESS you used a gun to commit your crime AND if your crime was diddling kids then you are not allowed to go work at a school for example.
We all know Bernies angle on this, that he is hoping to pick up Democrat votes from the prison population. I wonder if he would be pushing for letting prisoners vote if they were going to vote Republican?
We can exercise common sense when it comes to restoring Citizen Rights to ex felons but when they are incarcerated they should not have any Rights.
Once you have "paid your debt to society" you should get back all rights.
