Much of the problem is that when the issue becomes a partisan ping-pong ball (as seen in this thread) it provides cover for both sides. Thus Obama could point a finger and say "what about Bush?" And Trump can point a finger and say "what about Obama."
But partisans, like a cat chasing a laser, can't seem to resist.

I believe this will be the case right up until the federal govt defaults and subsequently collapses.
Could they lower their interest rates as they are collapsing? You might see some debt go.
