The “enabling legislation” passed by the Republican Majority Florida State Legislature, effectively overturned the will of the voters of Florida when they voted in 2018 to restore voting rights, with the exception of murderers and sex offenders, to all felons who have finished incarceration and probation. It’s basically a poll tax.

Quote:
On a party-line vote Thursday night, Senate Republicans pushed through a draconian bill that will compel ex-felons to pay all fines, fees, and restitution associated with their sentences before they can regain their right to vote. The Florida House of Representatives passed a similar bill in April; the two measures will soon be reconciled and sent to Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign the final version.

Although some Senate Republicans initially floated a compromise that would allow ex-felons to vote if their fines were converted to civil liens, they eventually caved to the demands of their more extreme colleagues in the House. The bill that DeSantis will soon sign simply replaces one disenfranchisement scheme for another.Nearly 65 percent of voters approved Amendment 4 in November, altering the Florida Constitution to overturn a Jim Crow–era law that permanently stripped voting rights from all convicted felons. By its plain language, the amendment restored suffrage to ex-felons upon completion of their sentence “including parole or probation” (unless they committed murder or a sex offense). It should have been self-implementing, automatically giving roughly 1.4 million Floridians the right to vote when it took effect in January.

I dont get why there are 'certain crimes' that are exempt...Once a person has paid their debt off to society, thats IT, their punishment is over and done with...continuing to hold their crime over their head conflicts with a founding principle of the US system of Justice!! Its unpatriotic in other words to withhold voting or other rights, for ANY crime.

Just another voter suppression effort by the undemocratic old boys club in the GOP.

We’ve seen this play out countless times and there is no sane argument denying it any more.

GOPers in power have come to realize that when more people vote, they usually lose.

So they want to keep the electorate as small and as white as possible.

The fines and penalties are part of the sentence, for any level of crime, so no, it's not a "poll tax".

So those with criminal minds and lifelong rap sheets should now vote on law and order issues. Maybe vote to reduce their sentences, or increased access to law libraries.

If someone has paid their debt off to society...what right do I or anyone else have to continue to hold their crimes against them? That is VERY 'un-American' ya know?

After all, America is an Anglo-Saxon State. It's where space ships and computers are designed. Amiright?

Someone doesn't know what a poll tax was.

Just admit that you want felons to vote, even if they haven't yet made the required monetary restitution for their crimes.

Good move. You have to pay your debts to society.

Be a felon, means you are a felon and felons by their virtue cannot be trusted because they are stupid. Only stupid people commit crimes. Stupid means you lose your voting rights.
