Universities must “decolonise” the curriculum in order to help black students close the attainment gap with their white peers, vice-Chancellors say.
Campuses need to become “racially diverse and inclusive environments” if black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) are to succeed academically, according to a new report.
Universities UK (UUK), which represents vice-Chancellors, commissioned a review into how institutions can ensure more BAME students graduate with top degrees.
Institutions should consult with students and “evaluate where it might be necessary” to review courses and assessments to ensure that they are not overly white and euro-centric, UUK said.
The report’s recommendation comes amid growing calls to “decolonise” the curriculum, as students urge their professors to examine whether courses are too dominated by white, male, Euro-centric perspectives.
This is nothing new. We were told to take the same things into consideration back when I was in college learning to be a teacher back in the 1970s. They mean well but they go too far and it's unfair to white people. This social engineering usually just breeds resentment. There will be a push back if they push too far. But I do not think there's much to see here because it's not new and they think they're doing the right thing. It's not being done out of hatred.

Well, should we start teaching from an Afro-centric standpoint because that too could be telling pseudo-history. You know, the idea that all ancient civilizations were originally Black people.
It's odd that they included Asians in this, because they usually do academic circles around white students of European descent. My daughter went to the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and it was no secret that the Asian students excelled.
Hmm...maybe we need a less Asia-centric curriculum so that the white kids will feel better about themselves. Oh wait...white kids aren't supposed to feel good about themselves because they are intrinsically bad due to their conscious choice to have white skin and a European heritage. My bad.

Too many disciplines are overwhelmingly Euro-centric. I don't see how giving more attention to the history, art, music, culture and philosophy from other parts of the world is a bad thing.
