If it does not come from the IRS can the information be trusted to be what was actually filed? I could fill out a bunch of forms for my taxes for the last ten years and make it look like I gave half my income to charity. If I didn't file them with the IRS, I would not be in any trouble.

How de we know they didn't get "special" deals or treatment because of who they work for or are related to?

You can roll traditional IRAs into a TSP account as a Federal employee, so just because he doesn't have them now, doesn't mean he didn't have them earlier. Also, even if he didn't have his money in tax advantaged retirement accounts, that doesn't mean he didn't have a plan or plenty of assets in non-advantaged accounts.

Being YOU made the claim, what tax laws DID HE violate? DETAILS matter!
Yeah, I don't even know what any of that means. I stated that his response for not paying taxes on 650 mil in income one year was because he was smart. Here it is if you missed it...

Good point about rolling the traditional IRA into a TSP account.

That is one way for these "old" elected people like Sanders to avoid the mandatory IRA distribution law. Guess Congress knew exactly what they were doing when the exempted "current" Federal employees from the mandatory distribution law.

He doesn't have any assets in non-advantaged accounts. He does NOT show any significant interest or dividend income.

It really is worthwhile to go through his return.

Lots you can learn from a persons tax return.

Bernie's 2017 return

Total Income....................1,150,891 dollars
Total Income Tax paid........ 297,550 dollars

I did a simple Calculation on his 2017 return...if he had filed it in 2018, under the Trump Tax Cut for the Rich Act.

Bernie's 2017 with Trumps Tax cut for the rich....

Total Income..........................1.150,891 dollars
Total Tax (Trumps Tax Cut)...... 348,605 dollars

An increase of $51,055 Dollars or 17%. Bernie must be poor and I must be rich since my taxes went down by 10% on an income that is 6 percent of Bernie's.

What is also interesting...on his 2018 return....

State and Local Taxes Paid.........65,086 dollars

of which $53,482 dollars were income taxes...in the neighborhood of the median income of 61,372 dollars for families in the US.

BTW....under the Trump Tax Cut....his deduction was limited to $10,000 dollars.

Lots of cool stuff in the return.

I know Trump supporters wouldn't because that would shoot their latest defense full of holes. "But Bernie didn't release his!" Actually he did.

I’m not sure why this is interesting. He’s a senator and sold books.

Because he said the Trump tax cut was only for the rich. Now having a million dollars in income in my book means your rich.

Bernie's taxes went up 17% using 2017 as a base.

I find that interesting.
