MMSO; I think you have gotten the parties wrong. It is the left that has gotten it all wrong and continues to get it wrong. Get a good candidate, one that is somewhat middle of the road, if that is possible, get behind that candidate and forget what happened in 2016.. Then you might have a hope of winning in 2020.
