We now have a constitutional showdown between Trump and House Democrats.
This was completely predictable, since Trump has been goading his opponents into this situation from Day 1. The tactic that he learned early on from his Mafia lawyer mentor Roy Cohn is to always attack an opponent regardless of the consequences to others - because the end goal is "winning" at all costs. Of course the question becomes - winning for who? Donald Trump or the American people?
Does this showdown threaten to damage or destroy our democratic institutions; does it undermine our system of check and balances? Or is this just business as usual and the way the founders envisioned that the system should work?
Seems we are going to find out, maybe the hard way. But the real curiosity is that very few seem to understand the significance; or if they do, they don't care because they seem to think it will "all work out OK in the end".
I am certain that C-D posters here will have some strong and well-thought-out opinions about this.
We are a Constitutional Representative Republic, not a Democracy. If we were a true Democracy we would have been history long ago.
There ya go!! I wondered how long it would be before someone came out with that old chestnut.
Of course we are a Republic and our system is underpinned by democratic institutions. As is the case with most modern democratic republics in the West.
So do you have any opinion or are you just going to avoid the topic?
It's been in trouble a lot longer than just now...
You lefties only see it because you hate all things orange man
What makes you think I am a "lefty" as you so cleverly put it? But you are correct in your statement, we started to get into real trouble back in the early days of the PACs, when $$$ began to corrupt our system in a serious way. Trump is simply the culmination of a downward spiral we began a long time ago.

Many Americans don't care as long as Donald Trump continue to do the "dirty work" for them.

Right. I get that. But what's the end goal? What's the purpose of this work? It's like living in a house on a hill, then excavating all the earth from underneath, while you are living there. Sure you are doing work - but what's the point?
Paranoid? You realize they have said exactly that right?
That's what I thought - you don't have any coherent response to the topic of checks and balances between Congress and the Executive Branch. Nice try at deflecting though.

You're premise is flawed. There is no "constitutional crisis". Republicans and Democrats have been at odds since they became political parties. When Trump, or anyone else ILLEGALLY circumvents Congress, and/or the Courts, then you can talk about a constitutional crisis.
The largest Constitutional Crisis I see is the Feds, States, and Local government passing illegal laws, the corrupt courts uphold that INFRINGE upon or Second Amendment rights. That's a Constitutional Crisis!
