The U.S. government has found itself a new cash cow: China. By slapping tariffs on more than $200 billion worth of Chinese imports, the U.S. government has made $55 billion, up $19.9 billion from 2017, according to the Treasury Department.
Last month, the U.S. collected $5.08 billion from China imports, 89.8% more than February 2018.
This should make those happy that have suddenly become deficit hawks.
And yet here is ABC News blithely reporting that "China does not pay tariffs". "Americans do", cheerfully reports ABC. And worse yet, there are many articles around just like this one.
If, as ABC claims, China does not pay tariffs, then why in Gods name would China care whether there are tariffs or not?
Of course China pays the price. The fact checkers at ABC have decided that since China does not write the check, then China "does not pay". It's an absurd position, no matter who writes it.
And the American consumers are footing the bill in the form of higher prices. Yeah, so much to celebrate.
Did you also celebrate the unemployment of 200,000 Americans when their jobs left for China? Do you actually prefer to buy Chinese goods because it suits your political tastes?

Does paying more for consumer goods because of the president's tariff folly suit your political tastes? Apparently so.

Yes, it does. I am all for it. We have seen the stupidity of sending jobs over to China, so let's do it the other way.
