“How Does Cannabis Help Depression?” is the topic of an article on Leafly, the largest cannabis website. But a mountain of peer-reviewed research in top medical journals shows that marijuana can cause or worsen severe mental illness, especially psychosis, the medical term for a break from reality. Teenagers who smoke marijuana regularly are about three times as likely to develop schizophrenia, the most devastating psychotic disorder.
After an exhaustive review, the National Academy of Medicine found in 2017 that “cannabis use is likely to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses; the higher the use, the greater the risk.” Also that “regular cannabis use is likely to increase the risk for developing social anxiety disorder.”
A lot of the paranoia comes from social stigma, same for the gays, if they weren't so scrutinized they wouldn't feel the need to keep sleeping around with multiple partners afraid of commitment and all the persecution that goes along with being gays.
What's weed doing to harm people around them? It'll keep people off social media at best, or more people will post about how they're philosophers at the worst.
I know two heavy users who became extremely paranoid. One is now in a mental hospital. She lost her mind. She was normal at one time. I think the risks of marijuana to mental health are totally underplayed..especially heavy use.
Or one guy wants to sell his books by pandering to the religious right.
