It has shown that, though medical advances fetuses can survive outside the womb at considerably earlier stages ( as early as 22 weeks). Still lacking objective evidence of the point at which a fetus becomes “a person”, leaves the issue widely up to interpretation. And, with a conservative majority, some of whom may accept their religious beliefs to influence their thinking, it is very possible that we will see Roe vs Wade overturned. This is just one reason why many people, when casting their vote for president, think primarily in terms of what type of person would the candidate likely nominate for the Supreme Court. The Court has the ultimate power in our country, not the president. So, elections have consequences. To all those pro choice folks who either voted for a Trump or didn’t vote at all, this is a possible consequence of that decision.
A serious post worth reading and repeating. Not one that should be marginalized by a smart-alecky, condescending one liner!

The fact conservatives do this makes perfect sense when you understand how they view the hierarchy of authority.

God > the church > the state > the husband > the wife > the children

Chief Justice Roberts?

Earlier in his career, Roberts filed a brief asserting the 1973 Roe had been wrongly decided and urging its reversal.
I wonder why prominent Republicans have been so silent on the Alabama law and the other states quickly passing other bans?

One would think that Dump would be OVERJOYED as he used lies like 'ripping baby from the womb" in many of his rallies.

Yet - they are all silent on this rash of anti-abortion laws being passed.

Hmmm.

That is correct. (as far as I know). That is mostly because the population is a 5th of NYC alone. It doesn't change what I said.

Yes, that is the heart of it. I grew up in a far-right sect of Christianity, and they were pretty explicit in their desire to maintain such a hierarchy.

Religion is the root cause of the whole “pro-life” movement. Unlimited freedom of religion has consequences. If churches and parents are allowed to teach children whatever crazy stuff they want, we can expect more insanity in the future. Childhood religious indoctrination is powerful; it is one of religion’s primary weapons.

We could at least revoke tax-free status for churches, since their religious doctrines are inherently political. Churches might do charitable work, but often that charity comes with strings attached, like being encouraged to join the church.

Trump has been strongly advised to hold back on the abortion laws if he wants to work with Democrats on infrastructure negotiations. No doubt, he'll begin commenting on the topic before long, but he isn't as personally invested in abortion compared to immigration and trade. Of course he knows how important such social issues are for motivating his base voters.

Trump’s silence on Alabama abortion bill is golden for activists

Back then he was a lawyer. Lawyers don’t argue their positions. They argue their clients positions.

I don’t see Alabama’s law being the impetus to overturn Roe v Wade. It’s too extreme. Roe v Wade stresses that there is a protection for abortion but that the boundaries are pliable within reason. If Alabama was smart, they’d be pushing those boundaries to get SCOTUS to move the goal posts. This law is too easy to say it’s unconstitutional and leave it at that. No justice will want to be associated with a law this draconian.

Just stupid posturing.

So why is it so important to these Louisiana, West Virginia, and Georgia religious conservatives that SCOTUS make abortion illegal in California and New York???? Because I know and you know that is the ultimate goal.
