The right thing to do in your situation is realize that you told us something that’s extremely fantastic, and you should just try to forget that you said it and move on before you really go down in flames. It’s one thing to exaggerate from time to time, but you’re trying to convince us that you’d do something that’s humanly counterintuitive. What you said is tantamount to saying that you wouldn’t drink a readily available glass of water if you were dying of thirst, or wouldn’t take a plate of food in the midst of a famine.

There are limits to what people will believe...even here in CD, believe it or not.

It’s not even associated with socialism in any way. It’s simple gift giving.

Do you call your Christmas presents “holiday socialism?”

Come on man. Geez.

Everything isn’t about politics. Must EVERYTHING be about the government this and government that?

What does it matter how he distributed the money? You’re gonna really push the idea of means testing or making a gift contingent upon how the kids behaves financially during college??

You guys are too much. You’re overthinking this stuff. It ain’t that complicated.
We'll see. Do you think it's possible this Smith guy will try and run for POTUS in the near future? He's buttering up the q by paying off debt to just one class. He has sent a message out to all classes, after only paying off just one class.

Never know. Lets just wait and see. The guy (Smith) is 56 years old. Not too old yet to run, enough time to run at least two - three times if he doesn't succeed the first couple of tries. That would put him right around the same age as what Hillary was when she first ran.

We sure could use more like him.

Student loan debt is a major economic hurdle in the USA and it's an issue that few other developed nations face, because the cost of higher education in those countries is less burdensome.
No doubt tuition will go up now that they found another pot of OPM.

What a wonderful thing to do. To give such a gift when none was expected. Good for him and those Graduates.
Just maybe it will be a Graduating class who will indeed pay it forward. After all, they now know first hand how much a selfless act like this can change a life. What a wonderful movement this can start, niceness can be contagious.
To those who only sight negativity and sour grapes, unfortunately the lesson was lost on you. That's too bad, bitterness is contagious as well.

Spiritually?

Look, everyone...

What Robert Smith did was positive in each and every way.

Those new graduates will go out into American society with something of a jumpstart, not saddled with debt. No doubt, some of those young men will make significant contributions. Mr Smith's generous favor will pay dividends we can't forsee at this point. All of that is good for all of America.

The spiteful comments from some posters in this thread are totally off base.

Like I said, I paid off my loans. Yes, college was expensive and no my family did not pay for me.

I don’t typically play the lottery. 70 percent of all lottery winners lose all their money. The irresponsible lot who had large debts will likely be in the same position with other debt in a few years. Paying off a student loan teaches you about budgeting, credit, taxes, and general responsibility. Having someone take over a responsibility that you promised to carry has no nobility. You don’t learn anything when other people do things for you. That’s why little kids often insist on doing things themselves. They know that’s how you learn. Unfortunately, these young adults forgot that important childhood lesson.

Congratulations, but this doesn’t diminish the students. The only thing that matters is their future.
