Don't kid yourself. Japan is still very much a society where dissonance is not particularly encouraged. In Tokyo, where the city population matches the entire state of California, to "go along to get along" in many respects is the only way to keep the place from falling into mayhem. Been there, seen it for myself.
Also worth mentioning is they are an unerringly polite people, not given to call out rude guests like Trump using a chair at a Sumo match.

Umm, showing up to praise someone in this way is hardly going along to get along. Now I agree that it would be unusual for the Japanese people to behave like American Democrats and tear the town apart, but this is also not the expectation.
