You're coming at this all wrong. The left isn't really trying to stop hate. They want to suppress traditional Western views on immigration and race. This has nothing to do with actual hate as it is defined in the dictionary. All you'll accomplish with this freedom-to-hate line of argument is to convince people you're a sociopath.
Even by YOUR words, you've defined hate as wrong, suggesting that only a sociopath would hate. What scientific evidence do you have for this conclusion? Why do you or others get to determine what is acceptable thought or beliefs? Who are YOU to determine who I or any other can or cannot hate and for what reasons they can have for this hate? By what right do you make such proclamations?

No, I'm sure we all have hatred in our hearts from time to time. But yes, I think it's wrong to cultivate it, mostly because that's the path toward mental illness. I'd prefer to stay sane and be around sane people.

While I don't give much credence to groups like the SPLC, it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that these types of groups have never really gone away from that region.
The Pacific Northwest has always been the motherland for Neo Nazi groups, just like Chicago and Los Angeles were the motherland for hardcore street gangs. So nothing earth shattering about that.
And it's obvious why these kinds of groups have formed a big resurgence. As have been pointed out many times before, there is this perception that America has increasingly been hostile towards white people (particularly males), and their rights and former status are slowly being eradicated by those 'loony' liberals among others.
Right or wrong, I do understand that perception, and for moderate white people, these types of extremist groups seem like the only ones that are actually speaking up for white people, and are not cowed by political correctness (the enemy of my enemy is my friend).
Someone must have received the left wing mailer that the new liberal buzzword is "white nationalism". It is already as tired and trite as "racist" has become.
One must understand that the balance of hatred and violence in the world has always come from the left, just as it has in America. Witness black lives matter, ANTIFA, Southern Poverty Law Center, Occupy Wall Street, La Raza, and The Nation of Islam.
As the left is violent by nature, such groups are considered "acceptable" as they are presumed to be just violent against conservatives................... for now.
The hate groups always get far more attention than their numbers.
The Michigan militia that became so feared and notorious for its bombing plot only had 13 members max in it, and at it's height in the 1980s, the Aryan Nations, one of the most feared groups, never had more than 20 members living in its compound.
And that number rose and fell, as most of the 'members' of the A.N. were just passing through and only stayed for about a week or so. A couple of drunken parties and they moved on.
Trying to look a lot bigger than they are is a big deal to all the hate groups, as they all want to influence others with numbers. But if some examination is done, most of these guys don't have many followers.
I have actually been to Portland, and seen the hate, the word in the title of the thread. It is not from Nazis, who are virtually non-existent. It is from the meth-head vermin.
Don't be a useful idiot (not calling you an idiot...sure you are a fine soul...just issuing the warning). Just because someone gives you a glib, foolish answer to the perspective and experience of another, does not mean that you are required to take the bait and use it. You can be the guy who rises being a hipster sock-puppet.

I'm in North Idaho for a few days eventually on my way to Glacier Park and this area is very peaceful and I see far less "hate" here than I do in Seattle or Portland by a huge margin.
This is how I see it. You're not Black. I'm not saying that North Idaho is a bad place to live or visit. I'm saying that race can play a factor in what someone experiences. I'm Black, and given Northern Idaho's history, it is going to be something lingering in the back of my mind. The Neo-Nazis who tried to take over got chased out. The locals didn't want them. However, there might be a few hanger-ons who still chase after that "dream" of a White-only homeland in the Northwest.

Not at all. The PNW used to be a bastion of White supremacy groups. That's what the topic is about; that mentality is making a comeback in the region, and the people who harbor its are organizing.
Many conservatives here are obviously deeply sympathetic to the ideals of white supremacists, even if they won't directly admit it, so you'll never get them to acknowledge this, much less even agree in principle that white supremacist ideas (or any racial supremacy ideas, for that matter) are bad.
The Idaho panhandle is kind of a fun place. Survivalist redoubts are a cottage industry. They target paranoid preppers with more money than sense, and sell multi-million dollar installations. The survivalists move in, then realize they are more likely to survive within driving distance of their cardiologist. Stupid survivalist sells at a loss, and the local real estate agents pocket big money. The average flip time is just over 3 years and the average ROI is a negative 18%. Thank you for your contribution to the local economy.
Drive into Sandpoint sometime. It's a small town, population 8400. There is a sign listing 30 churches as you drive into town (there are actually 46). Those folks don't get along with anyone. When you get down to the First Baptist Church of Green Jello you know Christianity is not big on their menu.
What more could you want? There's Lake Pend Orielle, skiing, hiking, homes available with your own airstrip if you need to bug out, and you can start your own church. There are plenty of normal people to keep things running, but about a third of the population is half baked fruitcakes. Plus, if your name is on some unfortunate lists, the Nez Perce will smuggle you across the border into the socialist but mostly white paradise of Canada for a nominal fee.
This is nothing new. It's been going on for decades.
