The real reason is because identity politics tends to be free and/or inexpensive.

Solving *real* issues requires actually spending money, something Americans are allergic to (they want to have their cake and eat it too).

Not suggesting Gingrich isn't or wasn't smart. It was very effective and righties embraced it. Those guys love divisiveness, that's been clear for 20+ years. Fox News doubled down on it and here we are.

Or do you mean Obama? McConnell having said we will categorically work against anything Obama proposes, period, kinda takes the wind outta that argument.
