JERUSALEM — Seven weeks after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared “a night of tremendous victory” in Israel’s election, his failure to form a government by midnight Wednesday has turned into a stunning debacle for him and thrust Israel into a new election.
Israelis will return to the ballot box in about three months, the first time in the country’s history that it has been forced to hold a new national election because of a failure to form a government after the previous one.
The Israeli Parliament voted to disperse itself early Thursday, only a month after being sworn in, with a majority of 74 in favor and 45 against in the 120-seat body. One member was absent.

Makes me wonder about the validity of that "night of tremendous victory."
In any event, another link for those who cannot get past the NYTimes paywall.
One of the key issues with his coalition was that Netanyahu wanted legal protections from being prosecuted for his suspected crimes. I can see why he and Trump get along so well.

Funny, but the BBC article didn't say anything about that.

The decision came after talks failed to find a breakthrough in a longstanding dispute between ultra-Orthodox and secular wings of Mr Netanyahu's right-wing block - despite increasingly desperate attempts by the Israeli leader to bridge the gap.

Easy enough to confirm.
"Netanyahu, who has led Israel for the past decade, had appeared to capture a fourth consecutive term in the April 9 election. But infighting among his allies, and disagreements over proposed bills to protect Netanyahu from prosecution stymied his efforts to put together a majority coalition."
"The new election gives the anti-Netanyahu forces in Israel, led by Blue and White leader Benny Gantz, another shot at toppling the longtime leader. It also complicates Netanyahu’s efforts to pass the proposed bills to protect himself from prosecution.
Even if Netanyahu wins the election, it is unlikely he will be able to form a government and lock down the required political support for an immunity deal before an expected indictment. That would force him to stand trial, and in turn put heavy pressure on him to step aside."

Yes, that made him look corrupt (whether or not he is).
Netanyahu is an experienced politician, but his competition (the commander or IDF) seemed solid as well.

I think the last thing that hinged on this was on Lieberman - and his issue was about the Haredim and military service.
