We should be focusing on both for sure. But have to agree with the OP that alcoholism and alcohol abuse is a bigger problem that opioids. Destroys many families and lives. Both are horrific problems and neither have any simple solution.
I would compare booze vs. hard drugs like heroin, to obesity vs. anorexia. More people have obesity and eventually get significant medical issues and mortality due to it, but anorexia looks more shocking, can cause sudden and extreme medical issues, and affects a younger population. Obesity is accepted, now even embraced in society despite its dangers, anorexia is not.
We knew 80 years ago that you don't even have to inject marijuanas in order to murder, become insane, then die. Posters and ads like this from yesteryear are like today's Internet: "I read it on a poster somewhere so it must be true!". Some people still believe it to this day:
If I'm reading you right, you want to "focus" on drug and alcohol abuse. For most Americans that wording equates to prohibition, laws, and war as your "focusing" tools.
If so, then your views do not represent mine at all, yet I give a very big damn.
I'm pretty sure they were talking about the legalization of all drugs that Liberals think is such a good idea. CO just decriminalized mushrooms with full legalization coming soon. Who thinks that's a good idea?
there as always been a thriving black market in for lack of a better term "little old ladies with prescription opioids"
these old ladies were on percodans or Vicodin and would swap or trade with each other when they ran short not even thinking they were breaking the law...
i myself got sober 20yrs ago however i still have contacts on the street level...i am told that these formally legitimate pills are NOW counterfeits made with fentanyl

Yup. They actually proved the marijuana-gateway theory. Not only is it a gateway to using harder drugs, it also seems to be a gateway to legalizing them.
