Why are we ignoring the deaths, medical and social issues caused by alcohol consumption when this causes far more problems than Opioids?

Quote:
Drinking too much can harm your health. Excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths and 2.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL) each year in the United States from 2006 – 2010, shortening the lives of those who died by an average of 30 years.1,2 Further, excessive drinking was responsible for 1 in 10 deaths among working-age adults aged 20-64 years. The economic costs of excessive alcohol consumption in 2010 were estimated at $249 billion, or $2.05 a drink.

Opioids—mainly synthetic opioids (other than methadone)—are currently the main driver of drug overdose deaths. Opioids were involved in 47,600 overdose deaths in 2017 (67.8% of all drug overdose deaths).

Alcohol consumption is believed to be the number one cause of dementia in our country.

Quote:
A recent study scrutinized the relationship between alcohol and dementia. The researchers found that alcohol use disorders are a major risk factor for all types of dementia.
Quote:
Dementia is characterized by steady cognitive decline and affects 5–7 percent of those over 60. This makes it a leading cause of disability.

We should be focusing on both for sure. But have to agree with the OP that alcoholism and alcohol abuse is a bigger problem that opioids. Destroys many families and lives. Both are horrific problems and neither have any simple solution.

Why do you think alcohol deaths are being ignored?
Here are a couple of guesses why opioids get a lot of attention.
Opioids get a lot of attention because they cause death in a much larger percentage of users than alcohol.
A user of opioids is much less likely to be able to be a functioning member of society than someone who drinks.

Alcohol is also far more dangerous to innocent bystanders than guns.

Because alcohol is accepted in this country as our drug of choice, thanks to our European ancestors.

Other, much less damaging drugs of choice, will land you in prison thanks to our corrupt criminal justice system combined with an astonishingly gullible population (see the post below for a great example of this tremendously successful brainwashing).

We learned our lesson 100 years ago when we tried to ban our accepted drug of choice, alcohol. But our memory seems to be much shorter than 100 years, so here we are again, fighting the problem exactly the wrong way. Hmmmph.

Don’t worry. Once you can buy all your drugs from a vending machine in Colorado the death toll will catch up quickly.
