The pool of future news crusaders was supposed to have been boosted after the election of President Trump in 2016. Journalism schools initially reported a surge of new enrollees, most presumably wanting to win reporting prizes by digging into Trumpism.

...

Whatever “Trump bump” journalism schools might have seen two years ago has apparently disappeared. Going to college on emotion, absorbing debt, and then going into a career field in decline has caused reality to set in for many of the “save the world” journalism enrollees of the post-election era.
Money quote:

Quote:
No sensible college graduate today wants to take a vow of poverty to pursue a career that friends and relatives look down upon.
I know journalism is a dream for many, and it's sad that their dreams were dashed because American journalism is in the gutter now. However journalism seems to also be the lowest risk, lowest talent pathway to policymaking in this country, and if you want to be a journalist because you have an agenda I have no sympathy.

An honest journalist would be hard pressed to find an outlet these days.

Greenwald had to set up shop in Brazil to do his own thing.

Very few people even know about the two most important journalists right now, John Solomon and Sara Carter.

When the average person thinks "journalist" they think of someone like Hannity or Maddow, or maybe the local TV talking head.

Remarks like that are as disturbing as some of Trump's.

On the other hand, for anyone who is a Trump supporter, I can see why they think journalists are dishonest. I mean, apart from the way Trump is undermining faith in all our basic institutions, when Trump supporters listen to the flagrantly dishonest declarations and insinuations coming from Fox (and Friends), Alex Jones, Sean Hannity, et al. - well, it's understandable to imagine honesty is gone.

Ah yes, there are no "honest" journalists.

All the historians are "revisionists"

All the judges that aren't far right are "activists"

All the college professors are "socialists"

There are no "ethical" climate scientists.

Heck, there are no "honest" protesters because they all get paid $17 an hour by George Soros.

The list goes on and on.

"Indications are the embattled journalism world will have even tougher sledding in the years ahead"

The article is accurate where it describes current conditions. The aspect of the future that is omitted from the article is the end of most electronic media. Without cheap energy, goodbye internet and TV. Future journalism will be more radio and manually operated printing press. I would like to say print first, but declining education standards put common literacy in doubt.

It’s prerty sad how the maniac has managed to replace “truth” among his flock as equivalent to whatever lie he is spewing that day about other people.

Pretty much the story of Trumps presidency. His followers had high hopes but after two years of fizzles it turns out Trump is a paper tiger and shadow puppet of incompetence with no future.
