Mexico panicking? I live on the border. I’ve seen absolutely no signs of it.

A 5% tariff is near meaningless. It’s not enough to offset Mexico’s cheap labor.
Probably because the Tariff will not be in effect til June 10.

Last summer Trump shut down the southern border for several hours and that prompted the Mexican government to shut down/arrested all the refugees in their southern border for a little bit.

Just like trade benefits all nations involved. But the Trump crowd - like their leader - has never been able to grasp the idea of mutual benefit, they see the world as a zero-sum game. Every interaction must have a winner and a loser. An arrangement that leaves both parties better off is incomprehensible. If nobody loses, how can they feel they've won?

Trump is a complete idiot and he's using our government like his own no limit American Express card.

Trump is finally doing what the U.S. should have been doing all along but no one before him had the guts or the foresight did.

Of course you Leftists would hate on a guy that is finally doing great things for the country all because he is not your guy. You guys would sell out the country if it meant you had eternal power.
The Mexican tariff alone will cost us $18.6 billion at a minimum. If it continues to increase to the 25% figure like Trump threatened, it can eventually cost us $93 billion. This is not a leftist thing. This is economics. America is not an island. We do trade with other countries because it benefits us financially. And these tariffs will achieve the opposite effect of what Trump intended. Levying tariffs on Mexico will put Mexicans out of work when Americans don't buy products. Guess what will happen? They won't have enough money to support their families in Mexico and guess where they'll go? Here. They will immigrate here, either legally or not, in search of work.

Will this tariff money go to pay down our debt? If so, I'm all for it. American companies and Americans wanting to pay less for their consumer goods created this problem Let them also pay down the debt.

Actually it reduces gdp and tax receipts.

AND yet at the same time.....Trump is using the big ole -- Americans are the victims of the trading wars line.

It's all jibber jabber.

With NAFTA --- the new NAFTA --- a deal was reached that works for all three countries. All 3 made concessions, all 3 got the conditions that were most important. Mexico and Canada didn't cave because of the USA's almighty power. They negotiated a deal which works for all.

Trump's blow it up, bully, personal attacks on Canadian politicians, etc. did nothing to move that deal forward. It did absolutely no good. The result would have been the same and sooner and with less ill feelings.

There are many ways to negotiate deals and playing the big bad bully -- we will destroy you to get the deal -- is a lousy way to do business. You would hate if your employer, your businesses did business that way but somehow all of a sudden it is an effective and desirable way to get things done.

So far it hasn't worked anywhere with anything.

For two and a half years Trump has been the bull in the china shop threatening, punishing, attacking with personal insults....and really we aren't any better off.

The protective tariffs lobbied for some businesses got those businesses a little boost, raise prices and is ALL about the government interfering with businesses. I didn't think that's what conservative/Republicans stood for.

When the Democrats talk about policies to promote specific industries, Republicans scream about socialism and govt. not being in the business of running private enterprises but somehow all of a sudden this is all good.....

And the one deal Trump's administration did get done -- the new NAFTA -- well it could all be thrown out with latest impulsive, chaotic policy.

Trump does not know how to approach a deal with good intentions and work with someone to hammer out a deal.

all that will happen -- Americans will still import goods from Mexico -- they just will pay more for them. Doesn't matter if Mexican businesses end up eating some of the costs -- so will the consumer.

American importers don't care -- they will pass on those costs to the consumer.

The only thing is if Americans stop buying all goods from Mexico -- and that's not going to happen.

Oh, so all's good. No sweat. You guys better make up your mind. One day tariffs are the end of the world, next it's nothing. BTW, that's 5 percent a month

It doesn't take smart to see your country being used as a transit point. Just look out the window. They have the military at their disposal and can shut down the flow overnight.
