In spite of the denialist movement and lack of action from our current government, the people driving energy decisions understand the reality of climate change and momentum toward renewables will continue.
Hopefully government efforts can catch up under the next administration post 2020.
Everything about the renewables rollout is bass ackwards...
Without a HUGE grid-scale storage solution, solar and wind are the equivalent of those mysterious modern ghost cities in China.

The "denialist movement" is MOST Americans. The ones that know a hoax and a financial scam when they see one. The man made disaster movement is losing steam as more and more people see it for what it is. Just another government wealth and income redistribution scheme to consolidate more wealth and power to the elite. Guess who pays the most? The Poor and Middle Income earner who can NOT afford higher costs for all products, and services, not to mention much higher energy costs (gasoline, electricity, etc)
That's quite amazing and I am excited to be a part of it. Coal generation down for about 35% a few years back to 21% and it will continue to fall. Renewables growing by the equiv. of a couple nuke plants per year...and, lets face it, after watching Chernobyl there are probably few Americans pimping for more nukes (ain't gonna happen anyway.
In the mean time Coal supply's the entire center of the country with 42% of it's energy. Funny that that's where you see the most wind and solar going in.... https://www.misoenergy.org/
Now if only we could get the signatories of the toothless Paris Accord to follow suit instead of merely engaging in Virtue Theater for the clapping seals.

Nonsense. Lack of storage just means that solar is generally only available during the daytime when it is sunny, and wind when it is windy. Outside of those conditions other methods of generation are needed, but more installed capacity of solar and wind still means more traditional sources can be increasingly displaced when the renewable weather conditions are met.
Obviously a large scale storage solution is ideal, allowing excess capacity to be generated during the ideal weather conditions for storage and wind and then used later, but this is not a requirement, it simply means the installed base of renewable generation capacity can be utilized more efficiently.

Nah, Germany has already pretty much proven wind and solar are a pipe dream.
Our vastly over-built wind and solar farms will soon lie abandoned and forgotten without a grid-scale storage solution.
