Yeah and that’s a fair point to make. Just as long as we’re acknowledging that might indeed makes right.
But by that same token the Confederates shouldn’t be celebrated either way. Our might told them to go screw themselves. You can’t leave us now because you are us.
This Pioneer guy didn't do anything. I could see it if it was a statue of Custer or something, but random pioneer dude might have been a friend to the natives for all we know.
I guess I'm glad our local state university has a similarly placed stature. But it is a native American with a feather in his hair while holding up his peace pipe. Don't know if the indians are down with it but I expect the non smoking zealots will be along to protest any day now.

The funny thing is that they do not realize how repressive and barbaric their thought process has become. It's hard to tell a liberal from a fascist these days, as they are fascists. Unlike Nazis before them, they just have not gotten around to wearing spiffy uniforms, jackboots, and colorful armbands. I am sure it is just a matter of time.
What’s ‘revisionist’ about it? The fact that we rather brutally colonized the Americas and damn near wiped out the locals isn’t really new information.

See what happens when you bring a bow and arrow to a gunfight.......
One man voiced his opinion on the statue over a century ago and now we are supposed to 'love or hate' the statue based on that.
Times change. Attitudes, opinion and culture change over time. Back then the 'Pioneer Spirit" meant over coming Indians, wild animals and a hostile wilderness. Today "Pioneer Spirit" still means overcoming the odds of the unknown from deep sea and space exploration to buying the first homes in a new subdivision.
It can be extremely hard and counter intuitive to understand history. What was written decades, hundreds even thousands of years ago is not always easily understood because the environment and culture of the times is not fully understood. Sometimes actions of the past are not a acceptable by today's culture and rules but it is still history. Do we tear down the pyramids because we disagree with the philosophy and religion of ancient Egyptians and because they were built by slaves?
Monuments are windows into the past. Windows into a different time that we do not always fully understand. But because they are there, we ask and question and try to understand and there is the benefit.
“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
