WASHINGTON - It would be a “cop-out” for countries to skip the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics as a way of protesting China’s crackdown in Tibet, President Bush’s national security adviser said Sunday.

Makes sense. What else are they doing besides boycotting?

Did the complete boycott of the 1980 Olympics in Moscow by the United States and 61 other countries, end the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan? No. The Soviets hung on in Afghanistan for another nine years after the boycott.

The Chinese have had Tibet under their complete control since 1950. So what makes anyone think that a boycott of the opening ceremonies in Beijing is going to change 58 years of oppression of Tibet and the Tibetan people? And as much as the Chinese hate to lose face (which a boycott might cause to happen) it will be but for a moment. The games will go on, medals will be won, the athletes will go home, and it will be statu quo in Tibet.

This boycott idea amounts to nothing more than a well meaning, but ultimately pointless symbolic gesture.

Boycotting the Olympics really won't matter. What will hurt them all more is boycotting the companies that sponsor the games.

I wish they would boycott the Olympics, that would mean more room for me this summer!
