I'd rather spend that on our millitary to keep us safe and give our veterans the support they deserve than on illegal immigrants.

What is a tariff?

A tariff is a tax on imported goods. Despite what the President says, it is almost always paid directly by the importer (usually a domestic firm), and never by the exporting country. Thus, if the US imposes a tariff on Chinese televisions, the duty is paid to the US Customs and Border Protection Service at the border by a US broker representing a US importer, say, Costco.

The Chinese government pays nothing, just as the US government pays no tax to Canada for that nation’s tariffs on imported dairy products - taxpolicycenter

Universal Health care could help give the veterans the support they deserve. So as I pointed out, you are OK with not paying for the things you want but want to condemn others for the same even though that isn't even the argument.

These threads always end the same way.

The military is a kind of social program. I’d cut that.

If Europe can’t defend itself, then they should step up and create their own military for their own defense.

Wow! That's a massive number. I did not know about it.

That is certainly the kind of welfare we can make drastic cuts to.

The exporting country pays in lost sales, lost jobs and a damaged economy.

American consumers can avoid paying a dime on tariffs by not buying anything from those countries.

That's the whole idea behind tariffs.

The country that is better equipped to withstand the economic effects wins.

Which is why Mexico caved so quickly.

So...what beloved social programs would you be willing to cut to fund free health care and college?
Cut military and eliminate the tax-free status of churches and other religious institutions.

I would not favor "free" medical, but Medicare expansion with retention of private insurance.

Also, I would note we already have free education in this country - for grades K-12. No one is running around saying "how can we possibly pay for this?". Free college is just a logical extension of public education.

So, you don't mind hurting as long as you think people in other countries are hurting too? That is a weird way of thinking, and misses the point here anyway. We, the US consumer, do pay the tariffs.

The country who survives the self inflicted wounds better. Swell.......and incredibly stupid economic policy

I don't get hurt a damn bit if I don't buy anything from the exporting country.

That's the whole idea.

That's why Mexico caved before the tariffs even took effect.

Not sure what's so difficult to understand about that.
