The 9mm is a fearsome weapon. Invented in Germany, it was used extensively by the Nazis. Hitler committed suicide with a 9mm Walther.
After the war, it was legal in the US, but not overly popular. Americans tended to prefer kinder, gentler weapons. Famous NYPD detective Frank Serpico had a hi-powered 9mm, which he felt gave him an edge over mobsters and dirty cops alike. He was an innovator who studied martial arts long before it became de rigueur for police. A hit movie was made about his career and life.
Starting in the early 1980s, the drug-dealer wars heated up in S. Florida, and the 9mm saw a resurgence. Weapons such as the Uzi and infamous Tec-9 were popular in movies such as the classic film 'Scarface' starring Al Pacino. Police, not wanting to be 'out-gunned' traded in their 6-shooters for 9mms. And the US military converted to the 9mm in 1985. It had double the 'oomph' of the previous 4.5 weapon.
The 9mm was immortalized in a famous rap song by gang-related hip-hop artist Vanilla Ice:

btw I must give credit where credit is due. Growing up, a book that had a major impact on me was A Plea for Vegetarianism by 19th century British health writer Henry Stephens Salt. I have borrowed from him for my thread title.
I'm in favor of banning the 9mm caliber since we all know .45ACP is superior in every respect.
The O.P. has earned my "Most inane post ever" award on CD forums.
The fact the O.P. states "It had double the 'oomph' of the previous 4.5 weapon." shows you how clueless he/she is. There is no 'oomph' rating for handgun calibers. The 9mm has a greater velocity whilst the .45ACP has a greater amount of energy. If you hit something you would benefit more from energy than velocity. And of course there was no "Previous 4.5 weapon".
