The Founding Fathers knew what they were doing. We can thank the Constitution and the controversial but oh so important First but more so the Second Amendment.

These are dangerous times that we live in now where there is a certain party that would dismantle the Constitution and turn America in to something it was never meant to be.

There is something that is common to all dictatorships and that is Greed. Today we see a terrible Greed for power by the Democrats and they are willing to tear down common sense and America itself to get it.

Dictators generally don't happen at the flip of a switch. Hitler was adored until finally people saw that they were next in line to be raped of their rights and freedoms.

We see the same thing in ths USA now.

Subtle.

Press is awful, let's curtail them.

Courts are following the Constitution. Let's stack them with right wing nut jobs.

Term limits don't happen in autocracies. Let me be president for life. After all, Xi will be so.

Taxes are for the middle class. let me pile on with a huge tax cut for my buddies and stick the poor folks with the bill--but tell them it will be okay because, this time, trickle down will work (even though it has never worked before).

Anyone who encourages programs for the middle class: Job protection, health care, fair wages, equal rights, etc. is a socialist/commy bastard (even though most people have no idea what either term means).

Government is for the wealthy to direct federal monies into their own pockets. The middle class is too stupid to know better or stop it.

White people rule America. Muslims, Hispanics, anyone of brown color is to be derided.

Women are to be used, abused and discarded.

The environment is to be used to enrich the ruling class. Screw it that people can't breath, and their houses are on fire or under water.

These things are happening every day, sanctioned by the current autocrat, and much of America is very pleased because, just like every dictator, he told them it is fine.

Of course, when they come for you, it will be a different story, won't it? But by then it might be too late for anyone to care that your family is separated, your spouse is shot as a traitor, and your property is confiscated in the name of America.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists, and will persist."

- Ike

Every President since has played ball with said complex, every one on both isles!

Nothing lasts forever. To the original question - we as a nation just haven't been around long enough yet. One or the other will come.
I don't buy that the "overwhelming majority of us still accept it".....some of the largest issues:

1. 40% of Americans believe and support "rule by decree" as per Trump as opposed to working through Congress (which is intentionally hard to do).

2. Many Americans seem OK with Trump overturning by tweet or action...all norms such "I'm delaying the census because I don't agree with what the SCOTUS said".....

3. Cruel and unusual punishment is smiled upon by a large percentage of the population.

4. Equality in terms of voting rights and the like - pretty much out the window with a decent percentage of the population.

I would use the words "a slight majority" or "more people believe in the constitution than do not".....but at a time when Putin can freely pal around with our POTUS, praise him and then say the "Great America" of Post - WWII is not what people want these days (the unsaid is that they want dictators like him and his friends that rape their countries)......I wouldn't take it too lightly.

Trump has defied Congress, the Rule of Law, Norms, the SCOTUS, the Emoluments Clause and who knows what else and yet some are claiming he will win a 2nd term.

If what you said were true - this would not be the case. A quote comes to mind...that is, many of these people may not know what they are doing, but they are still doing it

"No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people."

When 2/3rds of the country thinks we are not headed in the right direction and legislators threaten death by militia to those who would ask them to do their jobs, you have to take it a bit more seriously.

Trump and his cohorts are dismantling most every piece of our foundation - and, think of it this way. Take Trump compared to former POTUSes...and how much he has stretched things. NOW, obviously this means it is OK for the NEXT POTUS to stretch them even that much further, even if the next POTUS is Trump.

Do you really think our Constitution holds when voters don't care? The Founders clearly said that the Constitution ONLY WORKS among a moral and ethical people.

Do you really think we have a moral, ethical and educated populace and administration?

The spice must flow.
Yes...that was a clever way to get around the 2nd amendment and still achieve the same thing that they wanted all along!

One moment
Totalitarian minded movement can’t survive in a democracy
The only way a communist movement can survive in a democracy is with a gun or a club used on the unarmed
But Americans are armed -now do you see why over 5 billion spent on gun control attempts?

So the JFK assassination wasn't a successful Coup? The Russia hoax against Trump wasn't a failed, attempted Coup? Think again.

I'd say that the liberal media's anti-Trump propaganda is teetering on the edge of a coup right now.

They just need to get enough people riled up to take violent action.

Oh plez....

Trump is not government.. .neither was JFK. He is just one figure in a single branch of government. Impeaching or even getting rid of him by any means isn't going to suddenly result in a change in government by coup. If that's your definition of coup, then we experience one on every election....lol.

Some of these Trump supporters are such drama queens.

Now... if Trump started pushing for the elimination of term limits... that is a tall tell sign. Several "democratic" countries have went down that path already...

another... When the leader creates a boogeyman to blame the nations problems on... slight of hand trick to keep the people distracted from the real culprit and intent.

another... Dismantling of freedoms of speech (press)...
