Aside from the fact this is not a discussion about superiority of systems but rather what constitutes a metric of Socialism, and aside from the fact that Canadians are NOT capitulating to anything by determining all of us will be covered from cradle to grave with a system delivering better outcomes for half the payment as compared to the U.S. I'll nevertheless play your game as I have access to far more ammo.
The New York Times? You're chitting me right? An American publication and you see no conflicting prejudice there?
Here let me help you out a bit with less biased and far more relevant sources than an American publication receiving advertising funding from American medical/pharma entities:
Sure. You blew that one. The contest was sponsored by the NY Times but the article which you obviously didn't bother to read was written from a Canadian viewpoint. Good job googling every socialist rag who advocates for socialized health care. Any third grader across the globe could do that, Bubbles.
As usual, you think you have ammo, but your powder was wet, as you are, behind the ears. I especially relish your condescension towards Americans. I bet you're Mr. Nice guy when you are snow-birding down here for six months, but right behind your thin, false veneer of goodwill lies a river of contempt for and feeling of superiority towards Americans that don't share your point of view.
You can have your system. Shove it actually. I'll keep my private insurance.
Obama and GWB did that... Farmers were being compensated for government actions.... It's much different than stealing someone's money for whatever I choose to do with it socialism...
A Republican majority approved the 16th Amendment in 1909 which gave the Federal Government the right to tax income and not reallocate it back to states on the basis of population.
States/ counties/ municipalities tax on the basis of property, income and consumption to fund local services.
Taxation is an element of socialism.
Taxation coexists with with capitalism whereby most stuff is privately- owned and most businesses, including not for profits, are focused on profit.
Insurance has been around for 700+ years. All public and private insurance, healthcare, life, liability, fire, marine, accident, worker’s compensation, auto, disability, income, property, casualty, business continuity, crop etc, mutualize risk- socialization.
Obviously, socialism has become the buzz word of the 2020 election. No shortage of silly comparisons with Venezuela, USSR, Cuba and NK.
Let me know when the US Federal Government is going to take over all property, close the stock/ bond markets, eliminate profits and decide everything for everyone.
If you want examples of how socialism works in the good ole US of A, look no further than the education and transportation systems.
Now tell us how you want more of either
I am just as worried about the Totalitarian nature of socialism as I am about forced confiscation of wealth and income for other people's uses. The few ALWAYS benefit while the vast majority of people suffer. What all the Democrat candidates are proposing is extremely scary.
The real issue here is that the democrats are supporting an agenda so unpopular (Socialism) that writers are jumping in trying to change people's minds.
A majority of Americans support what you refer to as "socialism", like a much higher minimum wage, guaranteed paid vacation and sick leave for all workers, stronger labor unions, a national health care system, higher benefits for the elderly and the disabled and a ban on for profit prisons.
