every time a tree from that forest dies it will rot and slowly release CO2 back into the atmosphere,
unless there is also a program to harvest the dead trees and store them in such a way that they don't rot.
I understand that. So in a mature forest, with dying and newly growing trees in balance, there would be no net CO2 storage or release.
Try planting trees in the deserts of Southeastern California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. Most of them would die off quickly due to extreme heat and lack of rain.
