May not work for “Progressive” politicians as their plan to give away free stuff to just anyone will require even more taxes.
The issue is indexing for inflation for both SS and the AMT, we have a revenue deficit so without additional taxes how do they compensate for the adjustment. Your free stuff comment is just ignorant nonsense.

I wouldn't mind a:
VAT Tax
5% social security tax on income $200,000 or less.
Raise eligibility to receive 100% to 70 year's old. At 65 eligible to receive 90%. 2% onward from 65.
10% Medicaid/Medicare tax.
15% flat income tax on any income made in a tax year $10,000 or more.

Not gonna happen.........not this century..................

Too many losers in this country hopping on board the disability as well as the S.S. wagon.
Too few actually working for a living and paying their fare portion of taxes.

We will need 4X as many people paying into the system to support the current amount of retirees
compared to 40 years ago.

Quick Answer: When everybody pulls their weight by working and paying taxes everyone wins.

I assume your handle indicates you are/were a firefighter. Paid through tax dollars? Socialism! I live in a county where firefighting is privatized. We pay by subscription. Only 40 percent of citizens pay. Yet, the fire department will answer any call....you just get a hefty bill after the fact if you haven't paid the subscription up front. The non-payers are gambling that they will never have a fire, yet the rest of us pay to make sure a fire department exists just in case they do. I have to pay more because 60 percent of owners pay nothing. You can't possibly think that this "free rider" situation is better or more fair than having EVERYONE pay a tax to support staff and facilities for fire protection.

I was self-employed for 45 years, so I paid in both halves. I will never live long enough to draw it all back out. Many people don't get it all back.

DH ran the numbers. If we had invested everything he and his employers paid into SS, it would be throwing off more than we get each month.

This is why I have always been a supporter of choice: you can leave your SS the way it is or invest part of it in private investments. Will this happen in my life time? Most likely not plus it is too late for those of us who are already collecting, but there is hope for future generations.

You want more funds for Social Security? Providing a quick path to citizenship for working illegal immigrants would add millions of taxpayers to help support the retired.

Many illegals already pay in through a stolen SS number.
