I can't see an issue here, as colour is fundamental to existing characters, along with sex - I certainly wouldn't be going to watch a female James Bond, if the director/producers were foolish enough to go down that path.
Reboots are certainly free to change main character characteristics. Starbuck being flipped to female in the Battlestar Galactica reboot worked well and the show was highly praised. Despite the initial controversy.
I thought this was interesting, who would have ever guessed that some citizens of a country outside this country would have an issue with who was being cast in a movie. I have yet to hear grumblings from anyone here about the casting, odd since some people seem to live for being 'outraged' over these things.
I can careless about the color of the woman who is going to play Arial. I understand that such role was designed for a white woman. But since Disney claims that it is woke, they are putting a woman of color as the leading role. Either way, its the same story, damsel in distress princess going into the arms of a white knight in shining armor.

Who knew that the mermaid was of a specific skin color. It's a cartoon.
I know the original cartoon never had any references about race. I doubt this remake will do so either, or at least it should not. Then again, in this world where virtue signaling by the SJW crowd is everything, maybe race and skin color will play a role in the script. <shrug>
Asians don't care about PC, doesn't matter it's Japan or China. They make direct racial references as normal speech. If a Chinese person calls a dark person by a slang, it is acceptable. Same as calling someone very white by a slang.
It's only Americans and Western societies that took offense in such depicts.
That reminds me of that 2006 Italian detergent ad who was remade by a Chinese company a decade later and the various reaction to the Chinese ad.
Wasn't Goku an other worldy being? I am not sure he ever was identified as being of a specific race. Then again, I'm no expert in the history of the Dragon Ball mythology.
I want Ryan Gosling to play Black Panther. Is that wrong?
Yep because Black Panther's blackness is tied into his storyline. To my knowledge, the Little Mermaid has never been ascribed a specific ethnicity or skin tone.
