A little-noted side effect of OP's story is the crushing of the US worker under the corporate boot. I used to read about the US labor wars of the early 20th century, such as the 'Ludlow Massacre' in CO in 1914. I would wonder how it was that they went to arms over a job!!?? That was inconceivable to me.

Now based on some of the things I saw in the past few years working in a union, I no longer wonder. Abuse of employees by large corporations is rampant. Remember the story about the Amazon warehouse in PA where they had a contract with an ambulance company? Employees were being driven so hard that they were collapsing.

Yes since Carter we have had the deregulation wave as corporations were needed to compete with Japanese and German corporations.

Even before that in the early 1900s companies learned cooperation and market price manipulation was more profitable than price competition.
