My thought is while women's soccer initially put some focus on women's pay issues, Megan Rapinoe took the steam out of the focus on women's pay to put focus on herself.

Oh man, you really nailed it. Listening to her on tv this morning discussing having just the right audience for the “substative conversation” she believes is forthcoming is laughable. You’re a goddamn soccer player, Rapinoe ... not a world leader. You’re letting the attention go to your head and you’re dragging your entire team through the mud with you.

Just shut up and play soccer.
She thinks she is the Colin Kaepernick of the soccer world. She is pushing for a huge payday by getting a Nike contract like he did. This is ALL ABOUT MONEY, and fame. She is just a greedy hypocrite. Do you see any of her other teammates getting all the media attention and national interviews like her?
The main $ comes from international/global revenue. They federation then divvies that out among the country federations. So the men (with less success) benefit from men's soccer being the most popular sport in the world. The US woman have been hugely successful and are popular in the US- however that does not change that their is much less demand to the women's game international.
So as has been posted- the women get a bigger share of a smaller pool of money. The men get a smaller piece of a much larger pool. I would compare it to SEC & ACC schools with middling football programs that still earn paydays when the conferences get a fat check for those two schools to play in a championship. Or revenues from SEC & Big Ten networks that flow to all conference schools. So US Women are the Boise Sate and the men are Vanderbilt. Vandy will get more $ simply by being in a more profitable league even if Boise St is a better team.
At some point it is like arguing over why players in one sport earn more than players in another.
In other words the men are paid to be the Washington Generals to the global Harlem Globetrotters of soccer. Giving the actual stars an opponent is what the money is for. No competition then the stars are not stars, they are just bullies kicking the ball past the over matched like the USA women's team does. And as such the men bring in much more money then the champions of the minor league champions, the women's teams on a global level. Even if the minor league team draws more fans in their particular market, the USA, where the sport itself is a minor as opposed to the big three plus NASCAR
"From 2016 to 2018, U.S. women’s soccer games raised approximately $50.8 million in revenue, compared with $49.9 million for the country’s men’s side, according to the U.S. Soccer Federation’s audited financial statements, the Wall Street Journal reported last month. In 2016, the women’s team generated $1.9 million more than the men’s."
Who cares about "filling stadiums" - it's the actual revenue that counts.
I agree in theory with the OP. And I'm a woman. For sporting events/leagues IMO it depends on the profitability of the league.
However there are some women's sports that I've read actually do make the same or more than men - Women's Tennis comes to mind in regards to popularity and there is still a tradition of paying the women less. There are reasons for it and against it but if we are going to base it on popularity and how much money is made from the athletes, then for some women, IMO they should be getting paid more than the men.

I agree with this as well. I thought I also read that women's soccer brings in more revenue than men's and IMO the women should be paid more than men because of it.
As soon as women's sports fill about one hundred 75,000 fan stadiums on any given Saturday in the fall, then they should get "equal pay".
It's like saying that hamburger and fillet mignon should be the same price, as they are both beef.
Not the same, not a good comparison....unless you MEANT to degrade women
Sometimes hamburger meat is superior meat. More often it becomes hamburger meat because it is not as good a cut. Filet Mignon is the best cut of beef.
Your analogy would then insinuate that men are a "cut above" women

I’m a female soccer player and I’m here to tell you, men’s soccer *is* a cut above.
Not saying that women don’t deserve a more fair contract, but physically and competitively, us women can’t compare to the men. It drives me nuts but it’s true. Play awhile on a coed team and then come back and we’ll discuss.
