The HENRYs was a hotly debated topic during the U.S. presidential race of 2008. The Democratic party often classified households earning over $250,000 as the "rich" and "wealthiest Americans". One problem with this classification is that it does not distinguish the cost of living in different areas in the U.S. For example, $250,000 may go a long way in Houston, but wouldn't provide anything like a lavish lifestyle in New York City. These high earners are expected to have much the same lifestyle as wealthier compatriots but they do so by sacrificing their ability to grow their wealth.
Many professionals, including lawyers, doctors, dentists and so on, have the potential to be HENRYs due to the income range for their professions.
$1.3 Million is not rich, $5 million is considered rich.
According to CNN Money at the end of 2007 it was 1.3 million dollars. That seems pretty reasonable to me for someone in his profession. His current net worth seems to not be publically known but estimates range from about 2 million to as high as 12 million or more.
Then came the big money. In the two weeks before he was inaugurated as the 44th president, Obama reworked his book deals.

It's all part and parcel of the Obamas' long, luxurious post-presidency, a nonstop vacay that costs taxpayers millions. It's as though we're financing kings now, not retired presidents. The Obamas were jetting around with billionaires and staying on private islands. Then they bought that expensive Kalorama mansion in Washington, D.C.
They did audience tours and hung out with more billionaires. There were lucrative Goldman Sachs speeches by the celebrity president. And all of this has been financed by taxpayers, who pay his $207,000 pension, along with bennies such as unlimited air travel, transition expenses, office expenses, presidential library funds, and lifetime Secret Service detail.
