REALLY?? It is fairly easy to teach a high school student to code.
And therein lies the disconnect. You think working at a top high-tech company is just "coding", but it is way more than that. It is solving complex problems while paying attention to things like patent rights, intellectual property concerns, good security so the code does not get hacked, maintainability so others can fix it, team work so multiple people can parse a project and work efficiently together, efficiency of algorithms, working with tons of third party packages that means you need to know standards across a wide variety of platforms, ease of use for the customer, international concerns so it works in all countries, export laws of the US, automated test harnesses so that it can be easily tested, and the list goes on. It is more than a bunch of If-Then statements. People who can do all of those things, and do them well, are in high demand. People who just write "code", not so much.

Yep and I should have been filing use tax for all my online purchases back in Ohio and other states before they started collecting them directly. But I certainly didn’t. Don’t know anyone who did.

The general vibe here is it’s a trade off. Seattle runs the state govt and our say doesn’t matter much so we don’t feel so bad skipping out on the odd sales tax.
True, there is nuance. But, I guarantee anyone sh*t talking Indian engineers on here doesn't work in STEM, evidenced by a previous poster using the term "American coders" lol.
I don't know how things are where you live, but here in the DFW area we aren't getting the best and brightest.
This is the thing. We have enough people competent enough to do these low skilled jobs, but they aren't in the market for it. No one wants to mow lawns, put down concrete, or work with MS SQL Server. American's think they are too good for these jobs and then our corporations go and abuse the visa programs.
There are plenty of Americans who are skilled on MS SQL Server (and other RDBMSs as well).
I haven't met an H1B yet who could out-code me, out-troubleshoot me, or out-administrate me on any database platform.

How many of your peers with similar experience are out of a job? How easy would it be for you to get another job?
It’s not even really a quality issue so much as a quantity issue.
Not that we want to go whole hog in the other direction, have too many and plummet salaries but there’s plenty of room in the pool right now. At least visas are temporary and keep the jobs local rather than offshore.
