An illegal alien who crosses the border can request asylum if detained. At that point the person is no longer an illegal aliens but becomes an asylum seeker. Detention is impractical with the delays present in handling such cases.
Asylum seekers require a parole (at CBP discretion) in order to temporarily admitted into US. Otherwise they will be held at a detention facility. It is THEIR burden of proof (not the US govt) to prove that they are being prosecuted by their own government back in their country.
If you think someone can just waltz into US because they can say three words “quiero buscar asilo”, then you are mistaken.
Ive processed asylum cases when I was working at the border. In some cases all they have to prove was an old scar from bullet wound on their body

1) we are not at war with Central Americans otherwise you would see US Marines manning machine guns and tanks at the border, not border agents handling out sandwiches to migrants
2) if dentention camp = POW camp, then this is going to be the first POW camp in human history that hundred of thousands of people RISKING their lives and paying smugglers thousands of dollars just go get in this POW camp

I seriously don't even care anymore what AOC says, she's been destroyed (figuratively) so many times in her short political career that she already lacks credibility. When she got demolished by the ICE director, that was when any remaining credibility to her was lost for me.

If we reduce their number by the only practical way - legalization we may then be able to control the illegal population. At the moment we have no shot. Way too many to deal with.
