Illegal Immigrant Bought Baby for $80 in Guatemala to Get Priority Release in US

BY CHARLOTTE CUTHBERTSON
July 30, 2019 Updated: July 31, 2019

WASHINGTON—Children are being rented, bought, recycled, and kidnapped so that single adults, mostly men from Central America, can gain quick release into the United States after crossing the border illegally.

The cost of renting a child varies.

“We’ve had indications … that it could cost anywhere from a few hundred—or even in some cases, less than $100—up to $1,000 or more,” said Kevin McAleenan, acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), during a congressional hearing on July 18.

McAleenan said in one case, a 51-year-old illegal alien had purchased a 6-month-old baby for $80 in Guatemala so that he could easily get into the United States. The man, a Honduran national, confessed to border agents when he was faced with a DNA test.

Homeland Security Investigations, a division of ICE, sent 400 agents to El Paso and Rio Grande Valley, Texas, in mid-April to interview families that Border Patrol suspected were fake. In the last eight weeks, HSI special agents have identified 5,500 fraudulent families—about 15 percent of all cases referred.

“Everybody knows that if they bring a child, they’ll be allowed to stay in the United States—they call it a ‘passport for migration.’ I heard that directly from a gentleman from Huehuetenango, the western-most province of Guatemala.”

He said almost every summary of the cases he has seen mentions the same thing: ‘The subject stated that he made the attempt because he heard in his hometown that anyone traveling to the United States with a child will be released.”

Our crappy laws encourage this, but... it’s vaca time for our overworked reps

That's really awful.

We need tougher laws at the border, no more asylum. Its just making this problem worse.

It's not true that anyone with a kid gets released. This has nothing to do with US immigration policy and everything to do with gross misinformation and desperation on the part of poor Guatemalans.

And that's why there are investigations on each case and a hearing before a judge.

We need to get away from Flores Settlement if we want to get rid of child smuggling.

Basically Flores Settlement states that children cannot be detained for more than 20 days in an immigrant detention facility with the adults. That leaves CBP with 2 options

1) separate the family. ICE has parents and their child goes to HHS. We all know how that went last November
2) release the whole family into the interior of US (ATD). This is what we are doing right now and the human smugglers are exploiting it.

or
3) detain the whole family, but that's a violation of Flores Settlement

as of right now the policy is anyone with a child gets an ATD. the only exception is fraudulent guardianship. In that case, the 'guardian' or 'parents' detained by ICE and the kid goes to HHS

5,500 fraudulent families and the liberal left cry about the separation of families?

No doubt. It appears that “families” were separated long before they got here.

Buying a baby to get into this country? Seriously, that is among the lowest of lows that a person can be or do!
