We always hear how women are "strong and independent". But really, if women are so strong and independent"
then why were they so easily "oppressed" ? and the like in the first place?

Women are no stronger nor more independent than men.
Men have been subjugated, the same as women have, and when they were, there was nothing they could do about it. Were the Irish so weak and humble when they were discriminated against? I don't think so; they were simply victims of the time, like Black people, Germans, and everyone else who spent "time in the barrel".
Women of the 50's and early 60's were simply victims of the time.
My mother became a microbiologist in 1961, but could not land a good job. She was told that a man needed the job.

I have no idea what you are talking about.
Many women are strong and independent compared to past generations when women had to rely on men for survival. Many women today are not independent.
Who says women are easily oppressed. There are laws that gave women equal legal rights and opportunities so I'm not sure what you mean by oppressed.

Physical strength. Might makes right. The old caveman saw of the male hitting the female over the head and dragging her by her hair into his cave.
That's how men subjugated women in the past. And they set up the social constructs to make sure women remained oppressed for centuries.
That kind of long term societal oppression is tough to break free of. But the times, they are a changing.
The logical hypothesis I've read is that men became dominant with the invention of farming. Men have greater upper body strength, on average, so they could push the plow for much longer durations. This gave them effective control of the food supply, even though women were likely involved in the sewing and reaping. Religions then codified men's dominant position, for the purpose of social control.
Things began to return to a more balance situation with the invention of the steam engine, which took away men's competitive advantage. Incidentally, that invention also led to the end of slavery.
