Trying to mischaracterize the Hong Kong protest in order to gain brownie points with Xi, all in an attempt to save his own reputation with the trade war.
Pretty low, what else would you expect from Trump.
Protests or riots, not our problem. Trump is right. This is an internal Chinese matter.
On a historical footnote, it was a damn shame that the UK ever annexed Hong Kong how they did (because China didn't want opium within its borders ). It should have always been under Chinese control. But, like it or not, today Hong Kong is part of China, and thus this is an internal Chinese matter.
This is tricky for any national leader. While the Chinese are handling this very badly, Trump needs to stay away from this one.
Countries have the right to rule over their own territory. Some times they do it well and other times badly. But they have a "right" to do it as long as the territory is part of their nation.
We have had countless numbers of riots and protests here in this country. Sometimes those have been handled well, other times badly. We have a right of assembly included in our constitution. We also have a right to the due process of law. They do not have a right to either of those over in China. It is not a free country. THIS is what the people of Hong Kong are protesting and rioting about.
If Trump wants to influence this situation in a positive way, he needs to give a series of speeches on freedom, democracy, the rule of law and the costs of acquiring and maintaining these precious political values. We need to hear that here also, by the way.
Speaking and advocating for these things and suggesting that China needs to step up and adopt these principles into its own system will be a better approach than speaking to the situation in Hong Kong specifically.
Twenty years ago the left celebrated the handover of Hong Kong to China. I knew back then that eventually China would place it's authoritarian grip over the city. I'm only surprised it took this long.

It was only 100 years too late. The Brits should have never had control over the city to begin with.

Would you have been happier if China had control between 1949 and 1997, so thousands more could have been added to their genocide count?
